Shafts have two main uses:
Ventilation: intake of fresh air and removal of stale air,
Services: distribution pipes, energy transmission, air, communication, escape routes
Techniques used:
Raise Borer: excellent performance on good quality rock, averaging 10 meters/day
Raise Climber: low speed on good and low quality, averaging 1 to 1.5 meters/day
Conventional method
Ventilation shafts average length 300m, completed in 45 days via if Raise Borer technique is used. However, if andesite rock and/or debris flow is found, the availability of the ventilation shafts is delayed, impacting mining productivity and safety.
Comprehensive diamond drilling has been carried out on the axis.
Diagrams of the work area show that it has been possible to drill shafts of up to 1.5m diameter using a raise borer in any rock, however, if the diameter is widened to 3m, the shaft collapses when encountering andesite rock and/or debris flow.
Drilling services for ventilation shafts are currently outsourced at this specific mine site in Peru, however, the company uses its equipment and knowledge in other countries/operations.
Surface located at 4600 metres above sea level, in a seismic zone, but this does not significantly affect the operation. Landslides not associated with earthquakes occur, as water seeps through the rock (surface area exposed to water and snow) and when mixed with debris flow, it generates instability in the rock.
In summary, the company is looking for a technology or method capable of delivering a performance similar to the Raise Borer, i.e. 10m/day, as it allows mine planning and does not extend the availability of the shafts.
